Driving academy announces schedule
Marlin Driving Academy announces its summer 2013 North Hawaii driver education class schedule.
Classes are planned from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 28 to June 18 at Parker School.
They are also scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, July 8 to 29 at the Honokaa Complex Gym.
Lessons are slated from 2 to 4 p.m. June 19 to July 1 at the Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School.
Classes are set from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 9 to 28 at Waikoloa Community Church.
The final summer session runs from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, July 24 to Aug. 16 at Kanu O ka Aina Public Charter School.
This schedule is subject to change; early registration is advised.
Driver education courses are open to students ages 15 ½ and older. Courses include classroom training and behind-the-wheel instruction, which is scheduled with each student upon completion of classroom instruction. Students learn rules of the road, driving safety and how to handle real-life driving situations. After completion of courses, students are eligible for their Hawaii driver’s licenses.

Pau hana technology talk slated Monday
Paul Ponthieux, CTO of Blue Planet Research at Puuwaawaa Ranch, will discuss the system that is taking the ranch off grid — a large array of photovoltaic panels and wind generation backed by a vanadium redox flow battery and hydrogen production — from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Energy Center.
The program is part of a series of monthly pau hana lectures for people interested in technology. The event includes time for questions and answers and networking opportunities, before and after the presentation.
A potluck is planned during the event. Bring a beverage and pupu to share; reusable plates and cups are encouraged.

Book club to discuss ‘Gone Girl’ Tuesday
The Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai to discuss “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn. Flynn mixes sharp-edged wit and chilling prose to create a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds the reader at every turn.
Light refreshments are served; new members are welcome.
The club will discuss Stacy Schiff’s “Cleopatra” in June.
Shriners meeting Tuesday for lunch
Kona Shrine Club meets for lunch at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at Lulu’s restaurant on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona. Club members discuss upcoming events during these informal meetings. All Shriners are welcome to attend.
Master Gardeners
to speak to seniors
The Kailua-Kona Seniors meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai to celebrate May birthdays. A panel of master gardeners will make presentations on topics of interest. A question-and-answer session will follow, as will a drawing for items for and from the garden.

Hepatitis prevention expert talks Wednesday
Thaddeus Pham is the featured speaker for a Kona Hospital Foundation lecture slated from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Meeting Hale, Building G, at the West Hawaii Civic Center. The lectures, held bi-monthly, are free and open to the public.
Pham, the Department of Health’s Adult Viral Hepatitis Prevention coordinator, will discuss the basics of viral hepatitis, including prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
